Visit of Apostolic Nuncio

On Friday, 22nd May, the Apostolic Nuncio to PNG and Solomon Islands, His Excellency Archbishop Michael Banach, did us the honour of visiting us for Vespers and dinnner.
Unfortunately we have no pictures of the liturgy - we were too busy praying! - but we began with the traditional Dominican welcome to a papal representative, offering him the Gospels to kiss, and the holy water with which to sprinkle the brothers while we sang - in this case, the traditional Dominican Regina Caeli (below).
Picture

Then followed sung Vespers (in English, mostly,  with simple tones for the psalms, as we sing every evening), and the Rosary.

After prayers, we enjoyed a fine meal of baked fish and vegetables:

After dinner, the Nuncio shared a little about himself and his dual role - representing the Holy See as an ambassador to Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands, and representing the Holy Father to the bishops and the Church in these two countries.  He answered many challeging and thoughtful questions from the brothers in a very open and direct manner.

Finally, we sang together the antiphon to St Dominic, O Lumen Ecclesiae.

A most enjoyable and educative experirence for us all!

On Tuesday, 24th February, Fr Joseph celebrated his first solemn Mass of Thanksgiving on his home island, Walis, just off the coast of PNG near Wewak.  A crowd of us went over from wewak for the great occasion, which saw just about everyone on the island, and the neighbouring island of Tarawai, took part.  Here are just a few pictures of the great celebration.

Solemn Profession of Brother Osborne

1/31/2015

On Sunday 25th January, 33-year-old Brother Osborne Bunn - born in Buka, in Bougainville - made his Solemn Profession (his perpetual vows) in the Dominican Order.  The ceremony took place in the MSC chapel, just up the hill from our place, because our own chapel could not accommodate all attending.  Our thanks to Fr Gerard Savian and the MSCs for their hospitality!

Here are a few photos from the Mass and subsequent celebrations.  The Dominican Rite of Solemn Profession is unusual in its sober simplicity:  there is no litany of the saints, no "consecration" of the professed by the priest.  Rather, the act of making profession itself is considered to be what consecrates the professed to God.

Brother Osborne is, according to custom, wearing the full habit of the Order, with the black capuce and cappa.

Christmas 2014

Wow, another year has flown past!  I was down in Melbourne in December for our Provincial Assembly, along with Deacon Joseph Wojem and student representative Bro. Osborne.  Later I had about ten days holiday in Sydney - my birthplace - with Br Osborne and Br Lawrence Bosekana, who is studying in Australia.  The two Melanesian brothers were particularly delighted with one excursion:  taking a train across the Harbour Bridge to Milson's Point, and then walking back over the bridge to the city.  (We also walked up to the top of one of the pylons.)

Other excusions included the usual Sydney icons:  the Three Sisters (a forest of "selfie sticks" !), Manly ferry, Parramatta River ferry, Opera House, St Mary's cathedral etc etc.

Got back to Moresby on 23rd, just in time for Christmas.  Usual lunch ... stretching from 12.30 till after 6 pm!  About 35 people in total ... here are just a few snaps ...

Christmas Dinner 2013

As usual, we enjoyed a splendid dinner to honour our Saviour's Birth.  After Midnight Mass and Morning Mass at McGregor Barracks (where we are chaplains), we were joined by brothers from various communities - Capuchins, Mariannhill, MSC, John of God Brothers and Marists - as well as a lay employee of CTI for a nice dinner.  A surprise visitor was Lucy George - you can read about her in a previous post -  with a couple of her children.  I hope everyone reading this had just as happy a celebration!
