A friend of the community in the news

Post Courier article on Lucy George and her 28 children.
Nearly five years ago, Fr Martin noticed in the back yard of the priory an old woman picking up sticks - rather like the woman of Zarephath (cf. 1 Kings 17: 10).  Indeed, the medieval sequence came to his mind:

Ligna legens in Sarepta
spem salutis est adepta
pauper muliercula.

["Picking up sticks in Zarephata, a poor little woman gained hope of salvation..."]

The sun was hot, and she rested awhile under the shade of our trees, so Father Martin offered her a cool drink and a biscuit - and there began a friendship.  It turned out that Lucy George - for such is her name - was collecting firewood to cook for the many orphaned and sometimes disabled children that she took under her wing in the nearby Nine Mile settlement.

Over the years the community has helped out Lucy with food and occasionally photocopying, since she also distributes material promoting the Rosary.
But even we did not realise quite the extent of her charitable work until we read this article in the Post Courier.  Happily, a prayer group with some connections in the right places had also befriended Lucy, and was able to get some corporate help for an extraordinary woman doing some extraordinary work.

Some recreation

PictureA view of Crystal Rapids
It's not all prayer and study at Dominican College:  some recreation is good for the soul, and here we feature a couple of our recent excursions:  a picnic at Crystal Rapids near Sogeri during the term break, and a trip to a local production of Shakespeare's hilarious comedy, Twelfth Night. (The latter was performed by the Moresby Arts Theatre - check out their facebook page here.)

Solemn Professions

The newly professed brothers
On December 8 (the feast of the Immaculate Conception), three of our brothers who are studying in Australia took their final vows - that is, made their Solemn Profession - in St Dominic's Church, Camberwell, Victoria.

Picured here with Fr Anthony, the Student Master, are Brothers Patrick Arahatara and Nicholas Tanau (both from Small Malaita in the Solomon Islands, and Brother Henry Natowosi, from the Trobriand Islands (in Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea.)  The pictures below give you an idea of the simple but moving ceremony.

Beginning of Mass
The beginning of Mass; the celebrant is Fr Kevin Saunders, our Prior Provincial.
Reading the Gospel
The Gospel is read by the deacon, Br Ben OFM Cap.

Before the homily, the brothers prostrate and the Provincial asks, "What do you seek?" They reply, "God's mercy, and yours!"
Brother Henry makes his vows
"I, Brother Henry Natowosi, make profession, and I promise obedience to God, and to Blessed Mary, and to Blessed Dominic, and to you, Brother Kevin Saunders, Prior Provincial of the Province of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in place of Brother Bruno Cadoré, Master of the Order of Friars Preachers, according to the Rule of Blessed Augustine and the Constitutions of the Friars Preachers, that I will be obedient to you and your successors until death."

On (Medical) Patrol

One of the pastoral exercises which our students undertake is to participate in a Medical Patrol conducted by the Canossian sisters, taking basic health care and health education to the villages and settlements around Port Moresby.

Here we see Brother Anderson attending to a child's cut ankle.  Running around in bare feet, children often sustain cuts and injuries of this kind - and without proper treatment they can become infected.

The brothers also learn to document a patient, to take simple measure- ments like blood pressure, temperature, weight and height, and to administer other basic first aid.  It's also important to recognise signs of more serious sickness (like TB, which is common in PNG) and to know where to refer patients for treatment.

Brother Augustine's Story featured in PNG Blog

A popular blog in Papua New Guinea has featured the extraordinary life-story of one of our student brothers, Augustine Karovi.

The PNG Attitude blog - edited by veteran PNG writer, Keith Jackson -  contains  a fascinating portrait of Brother Augustine's life before he joined the Order - a life with experiences which few of us, happily, have ever known - including being subjected to torture.
The author of the column knew Augustine in his school days.  He is not a Catholic, and a few of his details on religious life are askew (e.g. Augustine is a simply professed brother, and a student for the priesthood - not "ordained" as the blog states) but otherwise Brother Augustine tells me it is accurate.
Be prepared for a graphic account.

Fr Paul Murray OP visits

Fr Paul Murray with some students brothers and two visiting sisters
Today the community enjoyed a short visit from Fr Paul Murray, OP, a well-known writer on spirituality, lecturer at the Angelicum in Rome and a poet.  His books include T S Eliot and Mysticism and A Journey with Jonah: The Spirituality of Bewilderment. He has also published four books of his own poetry. For Fr Martin it was a particular delight to see Fr Paul again, as they had met previously in Adelaide.
Fr Paul is directing a retreat for the Missionaries of Charity in Port Moresby.  In our visit to us he was keen to hear about the local brothers' families and customs, their experience of religious life and even the food.  we also heard a little bit about goings-on in Rome  ... to which city Fr Paul returns next week.
A delightful interlude on the first day back of third term - the Feast of St Augustine!

Christmas 2011
Here you can see some of the community celebrating Christmas Dinner.  Many have donned funny hats, and I am letting off one of those explosive sqabs that shoot streamers over the table.  We had pumpkin soup, chicken, ham, rice, salad, and a traditional Christmas pudding with brandy sauce. I had as much fun doing the cooking as eating it - well, almost!

Praying the Rosary at the graveside: (L-R) Bros Godfrey, Anderson, John Bosco, Osborne, Martin, David.
Today, as is our custom each year, between the Commemoration of All Souls (2nd Nov.) and of All Deceased Dominican Brothers and Sisters (8th Nov.) the community visited the nearby Nine Mile Cemetery to pray at the grave of the only Dominican friar buried in Papua New Guinea:  Fr Ambrose Loughnan.  There the community prayed the Rosary, sang the Salve Regina, and prayed several prayers from the Order's Ritual.

Holy Lord, almighty Father, eternal God,  though we cannot entreat you enough for our own sins,  yet loving devotion moves us to intercede for others.   Trusting, therefore, in your generous love and kindness,  we earnestly pray that you will mercifully receive  the soul of your servant who returns to you. Let Michael, the archangel of your covenant be with him. and by the hands of your holy angels gather him into the company of your saints and chosen ones,  to the bosom of the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.   Rescue him from the powers of darkness and the place of punishment.  Let him not be brought to shame by any offenses committed  through ignorance or human weakness,  whether by reason of his own iniquity  or because of the fragile nature that is common to us all.   Rather, may he be recognized by your friends as one of your own  and enjoy the blessed repose of holy peace. Then, when the great and awesome day of judgement comes,  raise him up with all your elect  to know for ever the joy and fulfilment of beholding your glory face to face.  Through Christ our Lord.  R. Amen.

May the prayer of the holy Mother of God, the ever-virgin Mary,  of our blessed father Dominic and of all the saints of our Order,  united with the humble supplication of your family gathered here,  plead before you, O Lord our God, on behalf of your servant, our brother  Ambrose,  that he may obtain the pardon of all his sins,  for he  has been redeemed  by the precious blood of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,  who lives and reigns for ever and ever. R. Amen.

O God,  by whose mercy the souls of the faithful find rest,  mercifully forgive the sins of your servants and handmaids  who here and everywhere repose in Christ,  that, released from every bond,  they may rejoice with you forevermore.  Through Christ our Lord.  R. Amen.

Prayers from the Order's Ritual.

Scaffolding down!

New building viewed from the North-West.
we have been a bit quiet over the last few weeks, because most of the work was on the inside, and not so interesting to photograph... but today the scaffolding came down, allowing us to get a better idea of what the building will finally look like.

Of course, there remains much to do:  an awning over the lower windows, windows to be fitted, rendering and painting, paths and landscaping ... but the final picture is easier to imagine now.  Below is another picture looking from the North-East.
