On (Medical) Patrol

One of the pastoral exercises which our students undertake is to participate in a Medical Patrol conducted by the Canossian sisters, taking basic health care and health education to the villages and settlements around Port Moresby.

Here we see Brother Anderson attending to a child's cut ankle.  Running around in bare feet, children often sustain cuts and injuries of this kind - and without proper treatment they can become infected.

The brothers also learn to document a patient, to take simple measure- ments like blood pressure, temperature, weight and height, and to administer other basic first aid.  It's also important to recognise signs of more serious sickness (like TB, which is common in PNG) and to know where to refer patients for treatment.
