The children of Rigo

11/9/2010

On Sunday, 31st October, I had the opportunity to travel with Robert - an aspirant to the Order - to his home village in Rigo, about three hours' drive to the East of Port Moresby. I went there to meet his family, but also to witness the consecration of many children - you can see them in the photo - to the Missionary Childhood Association.  The Consecration was carried out by Fr Homero Marin, CM, who is the Promoter of the Association in the Archdiocese of Port Moresby.
The people only get Mass two or three times a year, so they were rather astonished to have two priests at once!  I hope to be able to help them out with Mass occasionally next year.
As you can see in the following photos, it is a beautiful place:  very clean, beautifully kept, and (in contrast with Port Moresby) very safe.  The village snuggles picturesquely in a bend of the local river ...

Mary Comes to Dominican College

11/9/2010

Each October, a statue of Our Lady "visits" a different home in the Bomana parish, and some of the locals gather at that home for the Rosary.  Each home prepares a little shrine for the statue for that night - and it is taken in procession to the next home the following afternoon.

Here you can see the brethren bearing the statue on their shoulders as they bring Mary in procession from the Franciscan friary to our priory.

And here is our little shrine to our Blessed Mother, in our community chapel

Let us pray.
O God,
whose only-begotten Son,
by his life, death and resurrection
has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life:
grant, we beseech thee,
that meditating on these mysteries
in the Most Holy Rosary
of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
we may imitate what they contain
and obtain what they promise.
Through the same Christ our Lord.
Amen

Building Work on Extensions about to start

It looks like action is about to start on building an extension to Dominican College to house an additional eight brothers.  The extension has become necessary because - thanks be to God - vocations are continuing to come our way in both PNG and the Solomon Islands.  We built a new house at Henderson (near the airport and seminary in Honiara), then we  extended it.  We have sent students to study in Australia... but still we require more room!  It is a problem, but it's a good problem to have.

The new building - which will connect with the existing, very sturdy and serviceable construction erected in the 1980s by Fr Maurice Keating - will provide eight serviced bedrooms, and two small storage rooms.  Every attempt has been made to keep costs to a minimum.  More kitchen and recreation space, and a new library would have been desirable, but these desiderata have been left to the future.  CTI itself offers an excellent library, and we believe we can manage our current dining and recreational facilities efficiently enough to get by.

Peter Mildner is our architect, and the builders will be New City Constructions.  The building will cost close to one million kina, or about Au $450,000.  Needless to say, the province would be tremendously grateful for any contributions towards this very significant cost.  To date, we have received one donation:  a personal contribution from the Vice-Chancellor of UPNG.  Thank you, Prof. Ross Hynes!

The basic floor plan (below) and artist's impression (above) will give you some idea of what to expect ...

Events in 2010

2010 got off to a great start at Dominican College with the Ordination to the diaconate of one of our Solomon Island brothers, Timothy Aihora.  You can see a photograph in the News blog, and lots of photos on the website of our province.

Another exciting event for us all - but especially for our Solomon Island brothers - was the visit to our college of the Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Dr Derek Sikura, his wife, Lady Doris, and a number of cabinet ministers.  While a PM of Papua New Guinea has visited us before, it was the first visit to our college of a Solomon Islands PM.  The picture below shows the community with the official party.  Click on it for more photos from our province web page.
